does anyone have any experience with Indian customs?

I will be carrying around 6 watches and 5 Tabs. I am a bachelor. What are the chances of me getting caught with customs? If i get caught how much should i be paying to get through.

Any experience anyone would like to share?

Depends on which airport you are landing. I have experience of Bombay and Delhi airport. Generally they dont scan the bags unless you have lots of baggages.
Bombay customs are worst, they just wait to jump on passengers. I took 40inch LED TV in 2011 from Dubai to Mumbai airport and had to pay 2000 INR.

Go easy and hope for the best, also if you have bills of all the items then you can carry upto 50K INR worth of items legally.

Thanks.

You dont have to be specific. Just behave like you travel everytime, even if you dont. Put the tabs in your folded shirts or trousers. Watches carry them in your carry on. Put them in different places. If you show them that you are nervous, they will pounce on you.

I will share my experience. I took two extra bottles of booze from dutyfree to give as gifts. This was something that I could not hide. So i approached the officer there, and told him i had two extra bottles, and as expected they wanted money, so I told them I had $10.00 and 200.00 rupees in my wallet for taxi, which i had intentionally kept. And told them everything else is in travellers checks. When they demanded more money from me, i just told them to make the legal reciept for whatever the charge was and I ll pay it with my card. Thats when they took the $10.00 bill and let me go on their way.

So just go confidentally and do not be afraid and travel safe!!

It also depends from where you are travelling and how long you have stayed in foreign country. In case if you are travelling from US and have stayed for more than 60 days, you are allowed i think $500 worth of goods without custom. But need not to worry, if they stop you at the custom, do remember Na baap bada na bhaiya, Sabse bada rupaya. They still take bribe (no offense).

On second note, while picking up your luggage at the airport, you will see some guys ready to help in carrying your luggage. Hire them, they will charge 50-100 Rs per bag and they go easy from Green channel. That's what i do all the time. Custom never ask them any question.
