AWD = All Wheel Drive
Answer is no, you do not need it. It is nice to have. The use is if you are stuck in snow it helps you get out of that because power is to all wheels. It does not help while in motion, people are under wrong impression that it will help you drive safe. But that is not true. What will keep you safe in snow is safe driving habits, anti skid technology (which all new cares have), anti lock breaks and good tires. Best advice in snow is - don't drive if you don;t have to. If you do, drive slow and take your time.

Depends on individual choice and how conservative you are towards the risk and driving experience in snow !
I think AWD, Tyre condition and break surely have good advantage when you drive car especially in slippery conditions !
I do have AWD but my Tyre was old over 40k which I replaced last week. Now it is great to drive in snow too!
It is an individual choice, budget and what kind of risk you are willing to take !
After all one accident can cost you thousands of $s and loss of life etc so I personally do not prefer to take risk much!

People will give you all sorts of answers. Not needed, drive slow, careful in braking. But the truth of the matter is, if you live in CT, you are better off with AWD. I have owned front, rear and all wheel drive. The worse, obviously is the rear wheel drive. Front wheel drive will work in 80% of the situations. But, if you are going up an inclined street in icy conditions, or have to emergency brake, or have to stop your car from slowly sliding downhill, you are better off with having power to all your wheels.
When it comes to icy conditions, which you will surely see in CT, nothing works better and safely than an AWD.
