Here is my opinion.. going through tour is something I avoid since I like to enjoy places by my time rather than sticking to their schedule.. I prefer enjoying limited places with ample time rather than just touch and go. For hotels.. compare NJ vs NY hotel rates.. I never lived in hotel there.. NY is like my second home and usually I do day visit there.. but many of my friends stayed in NJ from where they took Public transportation to Port Authority Bus Terminal in NY however if you get better deal, find something in NY.. Just check deals..
