H1b Extension Doubt   Desi   12/02/2016 11:27 AM  

Hi,

My H1b expires in next 6 months and extension needs to be filed while my passport expires in next 9 months.Is that an issue and should i apply for a new passport before filing for H1 extension.Please let me know.

Also how long does it take for getting the new passport.Is there a Tatkal application.Please let me know if any pointers.Thanks.

You would need new passport as passport must be valid for 6 months at the time of filing... Normal processing of passport via CKGS takes less than 10 business days.. I recently received my passport in my hand in 9 business days including Shipping.. Tatkal has different criterias and you may not fit for that one though you can check on Indian embassy's site as you will need first email approval from Embassy to file Tatkal.. I would suggest just go ahead and get your new passport issued and then apply for extension..

I also agree. New normal procedure is fast. I just got it for my husband, son and myself. I got it within 2 weeks after applying.

I recently had the same issue. I sent my passport first for renewal (ups has notary service $5/doc) received it in 10 days via tatkal- if less than 90 days from expiry. Then applied for extension normal- took more than two months....had emergency travel so upgraded to premium received in 6 business days. Hope this helps.
