Is your phone GSM type that can be switched with any SIM card? Then you can use the same phone. If you are on contract you have to call you phone carrier to unlock the phone. They will send a code to unlock.

multiple options !

Current contract phone can use as it is ! ATT allow this but international roaming expensive !

You can convert to pre-paid same number that works too ! again this is not cheap either !

Easy option is,
Find a phone in india and have an Indian SIM. This will be pretty cheap! If you wanted to use current phone with Indian SIM, that needs to be unlocked. If your handset payment is complete, ask your carrier. They will do it for free !

Thanks my phone is ATT and I bought it so payment is complete, my concern was that I want my US phone to remain functional, if I use an Indian SIM then US SIM will not work, is that correct?

Yes if you change that with Indian SIM. If you want that to be active then pay for international service ! You can put US SIM once you are back though !

I use my US SIM with ATT’s int’l service ($10/day) as soon as I land until I reach my hometown (same day). Once in my hometown I get a pre-paid sim and use the India number but keep my WhatsApp account still tied to my US number. Obviously if you switch your SIM to an Indian number your US number will no long work for regular calls.

I traveled quite a bit to India in the last 5 years and this has worked perfectly for me and has been cost effective.
