Living in NJ vs NY vs CT vs MS    J   06/12/2018 07:14 AM

Moving with my family to the US soon, and I have options to live in any of these 4 states - NJ, NY, CT or MS. I mostly work from home, with extensive travel once or twice in a month which is why I have the flexibility to move to any of these states. Below are my pre-requisites in the order of preference -

1) Has to be an Apartment preferably with a good Indian community
2) Safe and decent neighborhood.
3) Rental budget of 1300 - 1500, for a good 2 BHK
4) Less overall cost of living
5) Weather / Climate NOT much of an issue.
6) My baby is a new born, good school district not relevant

Can you please help me suggest what my best options are and also any good community apartments in the places you suggest?

The closest I've come to after doing research on my own is Hartford. Looking forward to your inputs.

You salary also changes with Location but not sure if it is fixed for you. If salary doesn't change, then Hartford is best bet because of low cost of living relatively.

Your assumption is right. My salary does not change with location, it will remain the same. Considering this, does Hartford make most sense? Or are there other options I need to be looking at?

Forget NY and NJ . NJ is ok but rent will be higher. CT is the best , cleaner and cheaper.

You can always move to NJ if you want to surround yourselves with 90% Indians.

May I ask why only these 3 sates - NY, NJ and CT are neighboring states, but MS is way south.

Coming back to your question, each state has its pros and cons. NY is the most expensive but that's a generalization as its a big state so some areas may not be as expensive as others. NJ is expensive too - has lots of Indians and is more crowded. It will give you the most India-like feeling. CT is also expensive, but relatively less - again some areas are more expensive then others as with all states. Indians are less as compared to NJ/NY but they are plenty - more so in Towns like Stamford, Rocky Hill, Hamden, Manchester, Farmington, AVon - to name a few. Weather in all these states is pretty similar - cold and dreary in winter (5-7 months) with snow many times. It does take some getting used to as these months you are pretty much cooped inside, and outdoor activities are negligible apart from visiting stores, friends house (all indoor activity). Summers are beautiful though and those months make up for the boring winters.

Finally MS - I have no idea. Its a southern state so least Indian population and least expensive as well. I will advice to stay away from MS.

I assuming you wanted to write Massachusetts (MA) not MS , since all the other states you are mentioning are neighboring states.

so MA and CT are much cheaper and quieter than NY and NJ. places like Manchester, Sound Windsor, Farmington, Avon you will find places in your budget and with huge Indian community.

School zone may not be relevant to you right now, however, you will find Indian community in good school zones only and school with better school districts have safer environment; less crime! else some ares in every city can be unsafe to live.

Thank you for all messages, this info is indeed helpful Sorry, I meant MA and not MS! So looks like Rocky Hill and Manchester are two good areas to look at.

OK, now that you did make it clear its MA, let me continue about MA. MA is the happening state and lots and lots of jobs are being created in and around Boston. The reason is Boston has excellent colleges - Harvard and MIT are the two best know. So if I were I would look at areas around Boston too. CT is much less happening place and MA, and life is much quieter and easier here though. I know for you job opportunities are not an issue, but do look at MA as it has huge potential.

Full disclosure - I have lived in CT for past 18 years. I have relatives and friends in NJ and MA and have visited these places a lot. Knowing what I know now my ranking would be - MA, NJ, CT and NY.

Having said all that, no matter where you decide to move keep in mind these are all great states - all NE states are. Also, you can always move if you want to later .
