L2 SSN and EAD   L2Dependant   06/03/2018 03:34 PM

I moved to US recently.
How many days is required before I apply SSN?
Once I get SSN, and apply EAD, how long would it take to get EAD?

Thanks in advance

You may go for EAD application and include SSN request in the same application to USCIS or you may apply for SSN at local SSN office as soon as you have your I-94 status. You cannot work until you have your EAD and SSN both.

I would recommend EAD and SSN request separately.

SSN takes 1-2 weeks and EAD takes anything between 6-9 weeks if all your paperwork is in place.

Isn't it that you need your EAD card in your hand before you apply for SSN if you are applying it separately?

You dont need EAD, you can apply SSN directly. I know that piece now.

Thanks for Suggestion Vishal.

You are welcome. Best of luck in finding your job.

In very rare cases I have heard the local SSN offices rejecting applications due to applicant not having a valid EAD. Usually the SSN officers do know that L2 dependent are eligible for SSN with permission to work in this country.
