Investing for rental is really not worth ...to get 10000 a month you need to invest 50lakhs ...salaries in India 10 years back for freshers is 3 lakhs in tcs ..now it's 3.2 lakhs !! So investing 50lakhs and you end up paying 20 years ... and the rents hardly coup with inflation

Investments on lands or buildings are worthful 10 years or before ...not any more because it's already reach the expense mark

Start with ROTH IRA or traditional plan, if you are eligible. After meeting this limit, you can put in 401k or 403 b. But they are good if you plan to stay in US for forever otherwise you can put in FDs in India. Everything legal and clear.

Not sure how safe and ideal it is to put in property in India. Just a few concerns, if you are putting in land then there is always a chance of anyone taking control of it in your abesense since you would be here and you need to make frequent visits to your plot so as to give others an impression that it is under your possession. If you buy a home, it’s price depereciates. Shops at malls seems like a good idea. But just my thoughts.

Invest in nuclear defense missile systems and fallout shelters.

I know someone that has lost his property to encroachment. I feel gold is safe at the current prices. If you want to invest here, I would suggest small Biotech or weed based start ups.

Yes thats true, i read somewhere like...Currently my age is 30, I need minimum 50,000 per month means, in my age 55 i need 2,50,000 per month.

Think how much we are saving and what we needed in our retirement.

If you plan to stay in US for 20 or more years, chances are you will get GC or citizenship. In that case, you will get Social Security, even if you move to India. In India a Social Security check of even $1K will give you 65000, at current rates, even more if dollar rises. So, there's your retirement planning if you plan to retire in India.

Ofcourse, this is a very simple solution. The best bet is to start saving and investing. Remember time is your best ally, so start ASAP. Does not matter how much, but start as soon as you can. If your employer offers 401K matching, do invest upto matching atleast, because that is free money. Look into vanguard Mutual funds (low cose index funds are best). Open an IRA/Roth IRA if you are eligible.

This forum is not a good place to look for options. Consult a finacial advisor, and better still educate yourself. If you have any specific questions feel free to emal me at ctdesi10 (at) gmail.com.

Staying 20 years in usa will make us rich!! But just imagine on true side you can't ...after 10 years my kids will be in college where the college feez anywhere from 2 lakh dollars to 5 lakh dollars .just imagine every year we save 25000 max and after 10 years you reinvesting that 2.5 lakh dollars on kids education.so I hardly have time to stay in usa for next 10 years !! If I get green card in 10 years I am lucky!! If not I can't leave my family in India for years!! This is reality!! So plan is stay in usa at max till 45 years and come back to India....

My personal experience is to better keep away from real estate in India. Real estate was good bet 10 years back, its not worth to invest in real estate anymore in India. Better start SIP (Systematic investment plan) in India and invest in Midcap or Small Mutual Funds, I have been doing this for last 2 years and easily getting 25% + return each year. Key is to start investing as early as possible and keep investing through monthly SIP plans. Below are some of good MF in india for SIP-

Sundaram SMILE Fund
Principal Emerging Bluechip Fund
Mirae Asset Emerging Bluechip Fund.

For lumsum (large money at once ) go for balanced fund... do a proper homework (study history of each fund on money control and over google and other documents available over internet) and invest. MF are worth investing keeping long term view of investment.

This forum is not the best place to discuss especially because most of the Desi's does not invest in US however

Here is my 2 cents !

1. 401k is one of the best available especially if your employer match some money ! I invest in this one !

2. 529 Plan. This is for education, state gives 500$ rebate on tax for upto 10k investment ! I invest in this one !

3. If you are in High deductible Health plan, you can put some money in HSA, this may help you to pay medical bills and this never expire. I used to invest in this one too but now I am not eligible !

Regarding H1B, even if you do not have GC, investment is really great option. You will not loose money especially because when you exit, your tax bracket will be much lower than today so even after 10% penalty, you may save !

Hope this helps !

Thanks Vijay and AB.. this helps me alot!! I thought I know lot of things looks like how tiny I am !! Ok vijay I follow stock market closely I maxed losses in double digit lakhs so left for god sake !! But looks like I am going to make 3 portions and invest 30% in stocks(strict no self trading only funds) 30% on gold and 30% on small real estate ...and 10% on extreme risk components!! Because we never know that 10% would become a bitcoin and I can retire early too !!

This is purely based on individual capacity however again my 2 cents

Conservative approach:
- Put the amount required to get employer contribution for 401k. Or whatever works for you.

- If you have kids, invest is 529. Chet is the CT 529 fund. 10k per year is good !Or whatever works for you !

Aggressive Approach:
- 401k - Invest 18k per year. This is irs max amount.
- 529 - I would still suggest 10k per year !
- If you have any additional money, put in stock ! etrade give free account !

401k and 529 can be invested in stock/bond etc so I would give priority to both of those !

I hardly save 20000 to 25k a year with consulting!! And I am planning for house loan too in India so need 10k per year for that alone!! So left over 10 to 15k I can't put so much in their but hopefully would maximize

In that case, I think the best works is put into 401k. This is pre-tax. That means if you put 1000 per month, it actually deduct only 750/- assuming you are on 25% tax bracket ! If your employer match 600, it is free money. Eventually with just 750, your total account balance will be 1600 ! more than 100% in every month! Happy investing !

Lol we know how Desi consulting works !! They take the money from us only and show case they are investing !! I don't think any extra benefit but that 401k sounds good atleast I can make 15% savings at end of the day

It’s all too informative but at the same time too scary. Wish we could get pension in USA the same way we have In India.

You don;t get pension in India for most private companies, it's mostly for government jobs. Same is the case in US. You get Social security here though, which is a bit like PF in India. But, SS will not cover all expenses if you retire in US, you will need additional savings. Everyone should open a 401k, if employer offers and max out, or at least put as much as needed to get full employer match. Even if you have to take the money to India with penalty you will still end up in positive. Inverst early, invest regularly and Invest wisely.

May be it varies from location in india, My home town is full of industries area. So rental building is top investment. Let me gave example from my own family.

My Uncle had invested in one build with (160 feet * 80 feet) around 2000, i heard it cost around 20 Lakhs (not exact amount, which i heard from my parents). And he gave for rent of 10000 thousand in year 2000, now for the same building he is getting 75000 thousand per month with these 17 years only two renter got changed.

So it doesn't matter when we are investing on building, but where and for which business area it is.
