Cars after 5-6years   Car   10/22/2017 06:36 PM

How long you guys typically keep your car before buying another one? Confused whether to trade my car and get a new one. My current car is 2011 Camry . Saving money vs new car...

If it crossed 80 K miles, then go for new else keep it until it reaches that threshold

New fords are nice to drive, but hesitant to buy because of reliability.

grt prices on cars leasing now and no commitment to drive brand new car

Ford has very good reliability, they say you should drive a car until roof falls off...

The answer to that comes down to what you want from life? Do you want to save money for your future or are you one who enjoys a flashy lifestyle?

For me cars are for taking you from point a to point b. They have to be reliable but not necessarily brand new. Camry is a very reliable cars and can go on for 200 K miles easy. If I was you, I would keep the car for another 2-3 years at-least. Its much more important to save for a house/kids education/retirement etc. rather than wasting money on buying new car every so often. Also, leasing is a bad idea if you want to save money.

Thants my 2 cents. Rest, everyone has their opinion. Maybe you want enjoyment and thrill of new car? You have to decide.

I typically keep the car for 10-12 years or until it starts giving issues such that maintenance and repairs becomes expensive and routine. Again, if you have lived in US for x years and don't have a house or nice savings, then there's your answer. in US everyone has a car, and its no big deal to have a new car. So don't waste on replacing car often. Spend and save somewhere else.

My philosophy is live the life to the fullest. If you save everything for the future, you are making a mistake because who has seen the future. Maybe you wont live until tomorrow. Live it like theres no tomorrow. You can earn money tomorrow again but you cant earn new life.

Take ur gut feeling and go for buying new car just mere saving is not enuf being safe to enjoy that saving also needed...what if ur car got stuck somewhere in snow travelling wd wife n kids etc in future think about it. it doesnt mean u shud travel only in new cars all im saying is if ur car not worth to travel anymore then buy a new one...just becos someone using for 20yrs it doesnt mean u shud follow it too..some breakdown at any time some just travel on and on.

Sunil, that approach sounds good when you see in movies or in novels, you have to have financial safety net as well so balanced approach is the best

I would say miles matter to resale the car, if you put 200 k miles on your car, then there is no resale value, better choose some AWD cars in market, which suits the NE weather condition and enjoy the ride, five years if you drove the new car then the miles you put on would be 50k to 60 k miles, you can resale it for better value, typically in US, don't keep the car for more then five years or 80 k miles, there is no value for cars and will loose your investment, it's my personal opinion.
