while going, you can choose to drop off rental car as it will be cheaper. Also since your journey will start as driving, you won't be tired.. I have done that. for coming back, if you think you won't be comfortable driving after this long journey, you can choose to hire cab.. I chose to drive from JFK to HFD in return journey from India, had to take 2 stops for coffee to be able to stay fresh while driving as initial hour was good for me but getting stuck in little traffic started causing dizzy effect.. so upto you..
