My sincere suggestion for you is to just go to India immediately. The time with your mom is more precious than anything. If it takes a month (maximum) in India to get the passport renewed, its O.K. You are a GC holder, and shouldn't have any problems getting back in. If you work, your employer would definitely understand the situation. Its a question of priority, and if I were in your situation, I would just leave.
