I seems you have informed your employer that you have the SSN. Does not matter, tell the truth to your employer and submit the receipt for the SSN application. Normally SSN office takes 2 weeks. While applying the SSN, tell the SSN office that your job is at stake, if you do not get soon. They may oblige to provide the number at least in a short period. I do not thing any employer will go for another candidate, they simply want to check your back ground. Just for knowledge, how a employer can trust you, if you have told a lie at the very first place to secure the job?
