I did cross country in 2010. Yeah it took 4 nights 5 days. I would suggest do an early start in the mornings, and wrap up before dark.(My personal fear of getting stuck at the side of the highway in the dark). Dont book your hotels before hand. Book it along the way, when you have an estimate of where you intend to stop. Enjoy it with a family member, as this may be a trip of a lifetime. with changing landscapes and beautiful scenery.
